Camping in Colorado

Camping in Colorado. Imagine sitting under whispering pines, a mountain on the horizon. A creek babbles quietly a few feet away.

You, your family, your friends, and a campfire.

This is the essence of Colorado camping.

Open the marshmallows and get to roasting. Gaze at the stars. Watch the moon rise. Tell some ghost stories.

Or just sit back and get away from it all.

Camping in Colorado offers a variety of scenic backdrops.

Rugged mountains, high plains, sand dunes, canyons, lakes and streams, forests of aspen and firs. The choices are endless.

Camping in Colorado So what’s your "wilderness adventure" level?

For families and folks who want to enjoy the outdoors but still retain some creature comforts, the best way is to stay at one of the well-kept Colorado campgrounds.

There are hundreds of campgrounds throughout the state.

Each offers various degrees of amenities including showers, toilets, driveways, tent pads (even ground for your tent), fire rings, and grills.

You’re still in the great outdoors, but you have some additional basic needs.

Many of these campgrounds have extra-wide driveways if you want to pull in a pop-up trailer of if you’ve got a Recreational Vehicle (RV). Camping in Colorado

Some of the state’s best campgrounds can be found in and around Colorado’s National Parks and State Parks.

If you’re looking for a backcountry adventure, we suggest heading into any of the many National Forests, and setting up camp wherever looks most peaceful and remote.

Many backpackers find this the best way to enjoy Colorado camping, with “getting away from it all” being the main focus.

This is a bit of extra work, but the rewards of your own outdoor escape are worth it. You might be the only people for miles around.

Camping is often best when combined with other Colorado outdoor activities:

Summertime is the busiest season for camping in Colorado!

So if you’re hoping to find a campground site, we highly recommend visiting (www.recreation.gov) to put in your reservation early.
