Go “Rocky Mountain Wild” at
Cheyenne Mountain Zoo's New Exhibit

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo - Rocky Mountain Wild

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo recently opened their new Rocky Mountain Wild exhibit, which showcases new, natural settings for the mountain lions, grizzly bears, moose, river otters, and bald eagles.

Because Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is the only mountain zoo in America, this natural setting is an extra special exhibit, giving you a chance for up-close encounters with animals most people would normally (and wisely) steer clear of.

The mountain lion exhibit, now called “Cougar Canyon” allows you to view several cats prowling and pouncing while you sit underneath an angled glass viewing area. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo - Rocky Mountain Wild

Not only can you watch the lions (and they’re watching you too) but you get beautiful views of Cheyenne Mountain.

I noticed two of the cougars watching my 4-year-old niece bounce around in her bright colored clothes.

They’re such beautiful creatures, but they’re still wild animals! I think they were seeing “lunch.” :)

The river otters are just plain fun to watch. “Oh, to live the life of a river otter,” one zoo patron exclaimed while we visited, and I can see why.

They swim and jump and play, splash around and play some more.

They even have a waterfall in their new digs. Good for some smiles and laughs.

To get up the mountain to the next phase, you can either climb the stairs or take the elevator up the Fire Tower.

The climb (or ride) is worth the wait.

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo's Rocky Mountain Wild Grizzly Bears

The Grizzly Bear section has a enclosed house-like viewing area where you can watch Grizzlies forage for food or slap at the water trying to catch trout in the river.

The best part is that the glass partition goes below water level, so you can watch both predator and prey.

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo - Rocky Mountain Wild I was pretty impressed with the Grizzly bear and all its powerful force and agility. But my niece, Nina, seemed more intrigued by the fish swimming around at her eye level.

Overall, the Grizzlies had a full house of captive on-lookers, and they gave quite a show with all their trout-fishing and fur-shaking.

The Rocky Mountain Wild exhibit also has an elevated walkway to watch moose, as well as a bald eagle. Don’t miss those. If you’re interested in Rocky Mountain wildlife, then Rocky Mountain Wild is for you.
