Colorado Balloon Classic
The Colorado Balloon Classic takes place in Colorado Springs on the shores of Prospect Lake in Memorial Park. It boasts the title:
“Largest and longest continuously running balloon festival in the Rocky Mountain region as well as the state of Colorado.” The best part? IT'S FREE. In 2008, the Classic is held Aug 30, Aug 31, and Sept 1st...Labor Day Weekend.
The highlight of the Colorado Balloon Classic is the early-morning mass ascension of over 100 hot air balloons. It really is quite a sight. Starting at 6am, the balloons cold-inflate, then turn on the propane, and soon are lifting to the skies. In 2007, the wind took many of them over Prospect Lake, where the pilots dipped their gondolas in the water, soliciting loud applause from attendees.
Cameras clicked. Propane tanks roared. And the balloons themselves floated about like great colorful giants. Some of the most unique balloons were shaped like owls, dragons, pyramids, and even a dead cat. Another highlight is the Balloon Glo® held on Saturday on Sunday evenings (weather permitting). This is when the balloons are inflated, but stay on the ground and "light up" with their propane torches so you can see all their colors at night. Concessions are available, and entertainment is also provided--bands, rock climbing walls, and T-shirt stands were there in 2007.
It's a fun place for a family outing or if you're a fan of photography, or both.
