Colorado Fishing* Near Colorado Springs *Want to do some Colorado fishing? If you’re in the Colorado Springs area, there are several reservoirs, lakes, and streams to choose from. But first--if “Colorado fishing” means flyfishing to you, then your best bet is to get out of town and head up to Cheesman or Deckers, where the trout fishing is always hopping. An hour’s drive west will take you to Eleven Mile Canyon, Spinney Mountain Reservoir, and the nearby South Platte River--classified as Gold Medal waters. Combined with the beautiful scenery, you are up for the kind of flyfishing every outdoorsman dreams of. But just because you’re in Colorado, doesn’t mean you have to be flyfishing. You can break out your traditional tackle too. Spinners work great out here.
Some of the fishing holes we’ve visited include Rampart Reservoir, just west of Colorado Springs near Woodland Park.Rampart is a 500-acre reservoir, used for the domestic water supply. It’s a beautiful place (lined with pine trees and hiking trails) and very quiet largely because, like many reservoirs near Colorado Springs, no motorized boats are allowed. You'll see only canoes, kayaks, float tubes, and shore casting. The trout in Rampart include rainbow, cutthroat, lake, and brownies. But I'm pretty sure I caught a little salmon when I went. Forty miles west of Colorado Springs near the town of Lake George, this reservoir is much larger—3400 acres—and does allow for motorboats. The variety and size of fish is also much bigger. You’ll find kokanee salmon, carp, cutthroat trout, brown trout and rainbow trout. We caught a Northern Pike when we visited. Grab a map at the Visitor’s Center for the best fishing spots. We’ve heard that your best bet at Eleven Mile is in a boat, which allows you to get far enough from the shore to fish the drop-offs. *** INSIDER TIP: We’ve heard from just about everyone fishing out here that a sure-fire way to catch ‘em is to use a dried marshmallow on your hook. For some reason, they can’t resist. ***
The North Slope Recreation Area is another easily accessible fishing area near Colorado Springs. Here you’ll find the North & South Catamount and Crystal Lakes. These can all be reached by taking the Pikes Peak Highway towards the summit of Pikes Peak. Crystal Lake is the most accessible and the most heavily fished. Again, these "Pikes Peak" lakes are non-motorized. In all three lakes, you’ll find brook trout, mackinaw, and cutthroats. If you’re looking for a beginner’s experience, the town of Green Mountain Falls has a man-made pond right in the middle of town. This would be a great place to take a kid fishing. Whenever we’ve visited the little park nearby, someone is always catching something. They’re small, but they’re biting! Fishing Shops in/around Colorado Springs
