Colorado Hot Springs:
Hot Sulphur Springs Resort & Spa

Colorado hot springs couldn’t be any more serious than in a town named Hot Sulphur Springs. They even named their main attraction after them—the Hot Sulphur Springs Resort & Spa.

This hot springs resort is about a 2.5 hour drive from Colorado Springs, approximately 12 miles west of Granby.

If you’re looking for a romantic getaway, this would be a great destination.

Or, add it to your list when visiting one of several nearby ski resorts or even the adjacent Rocky Mountain National Park.

We really enjoyed this unique, health-oriented place. It’s made up of 24 mineral pools and private baths, which are located at various points along a hillside adjacent the resort. They also offer massage and body treatments, facials, and waxing.

Colorado Hot Springs Mt Princeton We were there just for a good soak, and we got it.

The pools themselves are chock-full of healing elements that they do no filter out or re-circulate, nor do they add any chemicals.

Natural elements include: calcium, chloride, fluoride, potassium, silica, sodium, sulfate, magnesium and lithium.

Remember, these are sulphur Colorado hot springs, so the smell of sulphur is strong. Some not used to the aroma may find it unpleasant. We, however, associate it with relaxation, so all good here.

The first pool we visited was unlike anything we’ve ever experienced before. Beneath a yurt-like tent was a large pool we had all to ourselves for about twenty minutes.

The heat of the steam kept us out of the cold winter air, and added a mysterious atmosphere because it cut visability to about three feet. When other soakers arrived, we couldn’t even see them due to the fog.

Next we headed over to a shallow hot pool with a waterfall, which did wonders for my shoulders and back, and after that, we headed straight up the hill to their famous Ute Cave Pool. This is a larger pool that held about twelve soakers, also had a waterfall, and was cut out from the earth which created a cave-like feel.

We loved the amazing views of the Continental Divide. While sitting in a two-person tub perched at 7,600 feet, we watched a pink sunset over the mountains. Stunning.

While it was fairly busy the day we soaked, it was always very quiet. In fact, the management makes it very clear that this is a quiet, relaxing facility, which the patrons seemed to appreciate very much. All pools are quiet areas.

This is a nice touch, as several of the Colorado hot springs we’ve visited have had some chatty visitors or downright loud kids with absent parents. We’re all for family fun in Colorado, but sometimes it’s nice to have a truly relaxing escape.

Colorado Hot Springs Mt Princeton Oddly, there are railroad tracks within a snowball’s throw, and while we visited, an Amtrak made its way through the little town, blasting its horn the whole time.

This obtrusive visitor made us laugh, given the tranquil enviornment, and was soon gone. But hot springs soakers beware of this potential interruption.

We’ve since read reviews that visitors of their lodge are given ample warning of the trains, as well as earplugs. A nice touch, we think. We didn’t mind it, but others might.

Another feature we enjoyed was that this resort is free from smoking, alcohol, drugs, or pets. And their lodge rooms are absent of TVs or telephones. The key to a stay at the Hot Sulphur Springs Resort & Spa is to experience an absolutely therapeutic rejuventation. We will likely return for an overnight stay.

Overall, these Colorado hot springs are one of our favorites now. My sore shoulder felt incredibly loose and agile after two hours in the mineral water, and we both slept great that night. Something about those sulphur springs made me feel fifteen years younger.

Getting There: From Colorado Springs, take I-25 north to 470 West around Denver, then catch I-70 West for 28 miles. Go north on US-40W for 45 miles to Granby, then another 10 miles to Hot Sulphur Springs. You’ll see the resort on your right.

Make sure you make that right turn, because if you miss it, you’ll have to drive another 5 winding miles through Byers Canyon before you can U-Turn back. (A nice drive, but FYI).
