Colorado Springs Lodging
Our Colorado Springs lodging “best picks” include something for all price ranges, and all types of stays. We’ve stayed in all of these accommodations with the exception of The Broadmoor, of which we’ve only heard great things--just haven’t made it there yet. Our taste in lodging leans toward clean, quiet, functional, and affordable. Ideally, you can also enjoy the outdoor beauty of Colorado Springs. Lodging choices abound, of course, so here is a quick list of our favorite picks for Colorado Springs lodging.
THE 5-STAR RESORT: The BroadmoorThe Broadmoor Hotel & Resort is the premier luxury resort in Colorado Springs. Very Great Gatsby out West. In the shadow of Cheyenne Mountain, this is a beautiful, sprawling compound of opulence.
Cafes, Lounges, Golf Courses, Tennis Club, Spas. It even has its own lake. We’ve driven around the resort grounds and it’s quite a sight. The Broadmoor has been lauded with numerous awards, and it’s been positively reviewed in countless magazines and television shows. We can’t comment on the service yet, as we haven’t experienced The Broadmoor first-hand, but we’re guessing you’ll get what you pay for. This is a top choice for people seeking a five-star golf vacation, as they have 3 championship golf courses, and this year (2008) they'll be hosting the US Senior Open. Room Rates: $160-$350 1 Lake Avenue Colorado Springs, CO 80906 (719) 634-7711 or (866) 837-9520 www.broadmoor.com
THE BED AND BREAKFAST: Cheyenne Canon InnThis bed and breakfast is a wonderful place to stay for a romantic weekend. It’s located on the southwest side of town, near the entrance to Cheyenne Canon Park.
They serve wine and hors d'oeuvres in the evening, and a gourmet breakfast in the morning. The rooms have different themes--we stayed in the African Safari room, which has a massive stone fireplace. Very cozy. The Inn has an outdoor balcony with great views of the mountains, and their Great Room feels like something out of the 1930s. If The Broadmoor is The Great Gatsby, the Cheyenne Canon Inn is his smaller, more affordable cousin. Very close proximity to mountain biking and hiking trails, as well as the Seven Falls attraction, this Colorado Springs lodging choice is a winner. Room Rates: $105-$225 2030 W Cheyenne Boulevard, Colorado Springs, CO 80906 Reservations: 800-633-0625 www.cheyennecanoninn.com
THE HOTEL: Bradford HomesuitesThe Bradford Homesuites are a great Colorado Springs lodging option if you like or need a little more room than a hotel offers, and especially if you like to cook your own food on vacation.
For the same rate as a standard hotel room (does anyone else feel like you’re stuck in a box in a standard hotel room?) the Bradford Homesuites basically give you a small apartment, complete with a very functional kitchenette. These suites surprised us. The service was excellent, the rooms were clean and modern, and there was a business center that let us surf the net at all hours. Very cool. Also has a 24-hour fitness center. Bonus. Located farther north in the city than our other picks, this is still a solid choice due to its close proximity to I-25, the main thoroughfare. We stayed here for a wedding weekend, and were very happy with it. Room Rates: $89-$129 5805 Delmonico Drive Colorado Springs, CO 80919 Phone: 719-268-9990 www.bradfordsuites.com/colorado.html
THE CABIN RENTAL: Mariposa CabinIf you’re looking for a mountain cabin escape, this little place should do the trick. It’s our favorite cabin hideaway. Located about ten minutes west of Colorado Springs in Green Mountain Falls, the Mariposa Cabin is a charmer up in the foothills.
Surrounded by trees and within hearing distance of a waterfall, this 1930s cabin has one bedroom, one bath, an open main living area with a couch, chair, TV, and fully equipped kitchen. It’s perfect for a couple’s getaway or a solitary escape if you love a rustic outdoors experience. You’re only a few minutes from all the Pikes Peak region’s attractions, and Green Mountain Falls itself is a fun little town to explore. Within walking distance, there’s a fountain and gazebo, and we visited the town swimming pool several times when we stayed. Or just sit in one of the Mariposa Cabin’s lounge chairs on the deck—it’s a great place to have a cup of coffee and gaze at the amazing views. Rates: $65/night or $390/week (719) 633-1524 or (719) 632-9453 Vince and Nadine Guthrie, Owners/Hosts www.mariposacabin.com
