Colorado Springs Shooting Ranges - Dragonmans
As Colorado Springs shooting ranges go, Dragonmans has got to be the most unique.
It's easy to understand why they dub themselves “the most exciting place in Colorado" on their website.
Because the grounds also feature a paintball park, historical military museum, and a bike park for motorcross, dirt bikes, and quads.
The most exciting part, however, might be the drive in.
After traveling on the prairie a few miles east of Colorado Springs, you will eventually find the American flag and Dragonmans sign.

Once you turn in, you are cautioned to travel slow.
As you crawl along the uphill gravel driveway, you begin to see some interesting sights.
Overturned cars, shot up by a machine gun, are scattered along the edge of the road with dummies hanging out of them.
Signs describe their terrible fate with messages like “This guy didn’t pay his fee” and “These people entered after we were closed.”
All tongue-in-cheek, of course, and it’s good for a laugh, but keeps you alert to the rules of the grounds.
Staff are friendly and very helpful. Rental guns are not offered, but they do have firearms for sale, as well as ammunition, earplugs, and paper targets available for purchase.
Dragonmans may also be the most accessible of all the Colorado Springs shooting ranges. There are no membership fees. And no time limits.
For $10 cash (they don’t accept credit or debit cards), you can sign up, get your wristband, find a spot on the range and shoot there all day if you like.
For another $8 you can bring a friend, family member, or significant other.
On our most recent trip to Dragonmans, we noticed a lot of family and significant others. The apocalyptic entry to the range might fool you, because this is a pretty family-active place.
We often see fathers with their sons, practicing rifle technique. Or husbands showing their wives how to properly load and handle a shotgun. And even girlfriends schooling their boyfriends in how to shoot tight groups on the handgun range.
There are the expected groups of guys out for an afternoon of shooting, and we’ve even seen a couple of real cowboys practicing with their six-shooters.
The ranges are divided up into three distances.
There is a 220-yard range for long-range rifle, followed by a 100-yard range for rifle, then the last segment is 25-50 feet for handgun and shotgun practice.
Tables, benches, and chairs are provided, as well as several shelters.
Wood pallets are plentiful and can be set up against each other to create an A-frame base for your targets.
Don’t forget your staple gun to keep them from blowing away. It can get a little breezy out there on the prairie, even beneath the twelve-foot earthen walls.
A range officer is on site, calling hot and cold range, and while he’s got several one-liners to keep the mood light, he is very serious about safety.
Please be aware of the rules and regulations of any gun range before you enter. Dragonmans has their rules posted very clearly right outside the entrance, and they are repeated frequently over the loud speaker.
Like other Colorado Springs shooting ranges, Dragonmans offers a handgun class which also fulfills the requirements for CCW. The cost is $100 and registration is required. Call for more info.
Hours: 930am – 430pm. Closed Mondays.
