Colorado Springs WeatherColorado Springs weather is one of the big motivators for people to vacation here, as well as pack up their things and move here. Overall it’s a sunny, dry, mild climate. The best of all of these, in our opinion, is sunshine. There are over 300 sunny days per year here in the Springs, and that puts a smile on a lot of faces. It is rare to get a day without the sun. We do have occasional have “gloomy” days, but even then the sun will shine through for an hour or two. Strangely, cloudy days can be a nice break. It’s a big change from our original home in the Midwest, where we once experienced 3 weeks straight of cloud cover! Colorado Springs weather is experienced in a more rapid cycle. In the summer especially, thunderstorms come just about every afternoon, and are gone by early evening. It’s affectionately called “the typhoon season.” ***INSIDER TIP: If you’re taking a summer vacation in Colorado Springs, outdoor activity is best done in the morning to avoid these lightning-heavy storms. *** Some residents may say that Colorado Springs weather can also be wrapped up with another word: windy. Because we experience a lot of rapid weather changes due to the mountains, storm fronts can often bring sudden and strong winds. In the fall, the winds can at times last all day. In the winter, Colorado Springs gets a fraction of the snow the mountains do. Usually we’ll get an inch or two during a storm, and it will melt away by the afternoon. Winter temperatures are mild, hovering in the 30s-50s, and we’ll have a few days that will “spike” into the 60s-70s. In January, the meteorologists love to report a cold blast, letting us know that “the bottom dropped out” and we’ll get temps in the 10s-20s for a few days to a week, but then it’s back to mild again. The high altitude also means low humidity, and many people experience an improved level of health as a result. Our family has visited from the Midwest and claimed their joints never felt better due to the dry air. But still others claim they can’t drink enough water or keep their skin hydrated. So it depends on your personal response. The mountains are fickle, funny monsters, and their effect on Colorado Springs’ weather is constant. In the winter it may be 70F and sunny, and in the summer we may get a chilly rainstorm that feels like October. We have a saying here: If you don’t like the weather in Colorado Springs, wait 10 minutes and it will change. :)
