Colorado State Parks attract over 11 million visitors annually. That's because they are a great place to "get away from it all" and enjoy the beauty and quietude of the Colorado wilderness. Out of the 42 Colorado State Parks, several are in close proximity to Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak region. These state parks offer endless opportunities for outdoor activities, as well as an excellent chance to see some wildlife--from wild turkeys to black bear to elk, you'll likely run across some sort of creature. Cheyenne Mountain State ParkThis state park is right on the southeast edge of town, nestled up against Cheyenne Mountain. Offers 20 miles of hiking/biking trails, a visitor’s center, and 1600 acres for playing, picnics, and geo-caching.One of the newest state parks in Colorado, Cheyenne Mountain is opening in stages over the next few years, with camping and group picnic areas coming soon. Mueller State ParkOnly a thirty-five minute drive west, Mueller State Park offers 50 miles of trails for hiking, biking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and horseback riding.Home to elk, black bear, mule deer, and hawks. Eleven Mile State ParkAlso known as Colorado Springs “best kept secret,” Eleven Mile State Park is home to a 3400-acre reservoir, making it a haven for anglers and boaters of all kinds.Fishing, windsurfing, sailing, and winter ice boating are all popular activities.
