Loveland Ski Area

Loveland Ski Area

Loveland Ski Area is a two-hour drive from Colorado Springs, located near the town of Georgetown, Colorado.

The ski area is actually made up of both the Loveland Ski Valley and the Loveland Basin.

The name comes from its proximtiy to Loveland Pass. The ski area has one of the highest elevations among all of the Colorado ski resorts at 13,010 feet.

Due to its soaring location along the Continental Divide, Loveland Ski Area produces a great deal of natural powder, making it a very popular skiing destination.

It’s also easily reachable from Interstate 70, and one of the closest ski resorts to the city of Denver, which brings in a lot of local traffic.

At 112 miles away, Loveland ski area clocks in as one of the closer places to ski and ride near Colorado Springs. (Monarch Mountain is another close ski area to the Springs at 120 miles, albeit further south.)

Given the altitude and early snowfalls, nearby Arapahoe Basin often “competes” with Loveland to see who can be the first Colorado ski resort to open first, with dates frequently beginning in mid-October.

THE BASIN:

The Basin is the larger of the two ski areas, and features the 13,010 foot summit. This means a lot of terrain is above timberline, and the bulk of the skiing is done in this area.

You’ll also find the main lodge here, with access to tickets, rentals and repairs, their ski store, and the ski patrol. The Loveland Basin is primarily for advanced skiiers, and has plenty of black and double black runs.

"Love Park" is located in The Basin as well, offering park terrain if you’re looking for rails, jumps, and kickers.

THE VALLEY:

The Loveland Valley is a great place for beginners and intermediates, with gentle slopes and a special ski lift for the beginner slope only. You’ll also find a lodge that has tickets, a cafeteria, a bar, the Ski and Ride School office, and a rental shop.

SKI PASSES AND DEALS:

For the 2010/11 ski season, Loveland is offering 4-packs for $119 with no restrictions and no blackout dates!

They are only available through their website (skiloveland.com) or by calling them at 303-571-5580 x136. That’s quite a deal at roughly $30 per ticket, given most resorts charge between $60-$100.

(For other ski area passes, check out the Colorado Pass, Rocky Mountain Super Pass, and the Monarch Mountain Season Pass).

GETTING THERE:

From Colorado Springs, take I-25 north 46 miles, then 470 West 26 miles, and get on I-70 West another 32 miles towards Georgetown. Watch for the signs. For more detailed information, visit skiloveland.com.
