Old Colorado City
Old Colorado City is a quaint, historic neighborhood on Colorado Springs’ west side. "OCC" is made up mostly of four blocks on Colorado Ave—24th Street to 28th Street. Primarily you'll find boutiques, specialty shops, restaurants, and art galleries. A perfect place for strolling and shopping. All with a mountain view. Over 100 businesses call this part of town their home, places as varied as these shops... Eve's Revolution-- an award-winning and highly-rated consignment shop for women, where you can find vintage/hipster clothing and jewelry. Republic of Paws-- a pet boutique offering specialty products and premium food for your dogs and cats. Colorado Tee’s-- will cover your souvenir t-shirt and sweatshirt needs, as well as Colorado hats, postcards, and knick-knacks. Art Galleries in Old Colorado City are also a popular draw. From Cucuru Gallery Café’s eclectic art and lunch venue, to the Hunter-Wolff Gallery of fine art and collectibles. And don't miss out on the Michael Garmin Museum, an enchanting space filled with unique sculptures of American life. Make sure to visit his "Magic Town" 1/6 miniaturized city while you're there. Some of our favorite Colorado Springs restaurants are in OCC, or close proximity. From Jake & Telly’s Greek Taverna to Front Range BBQ only a block away. Mountain Shadows restaurant is in the neighborhood, and Meadow Muffins always gets a big draw for their hot wings and live music.
As coffee houses go, Agia Sophia is one of our top picks in town--only 1 block north on 29th street. Quiet nooks and books can be found throughout this cafe, as well as cozy seating and warm lighting. And our favorite ice cream shop, Colorado City Creamery, is smack-dab in the middle of the neighborhood. Make your own sundae and have a seat outside on one of the benches. Often in the summer, a live musician will keep you entertained. And don't forget about the other ice cream place: Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, who also serve home-made fudge and caramel. A big part of the charm, we think, is Bancroft Park, located on the south side of OCC. Mature trees and a band shell make this an inviting place to spend some time, before or after shopping. Throughout the year you'll see various art festivals in this park, and there's always the farmer's market... In the warm months (June-Oct), the 24th Street Farmer’s Market is held every Saturday from 7am-1pm, offering fresh (local!) produce, salsas, jerky, and those amazing macaroons. You can also find horse carriage rides here, and in the winter, don’t be surprised to hear the driver singing Christmas Carols. Both Academy Riding Stables and 3G's Front Range Carriage offer trips around town by horse. Festivals are another big draw for Old Colorado City. This is where the incredibly popular “Territory Days” is held—an annual 3-day block party where vendors dress up in Old West outfits, Native American dancers abound, and food is always on the grill. This past winter, the “Ice on the Avenue” event was held, with professional ice carvers turning 300-pound blocks of ice into works of art. Other events include: Easter Egg Hunt, Art Walk, Good Times Car Show, Taste of OCC, the Great Pumpkin Weigh-Off, Scarecrow Days, and Holiday Magic. The Pikes Peak Library’s OCC branch is also right on the edge of this neighborhood, a Carnegie building that’s definitely worth a peek inside. They recently renovated, so stop in and say hello! Getting There: From I-25, take the US-24 Cimaron St Exit (Exit 141) and go west on US-24/Cimarron for 1.6 miles. Turn right on S 21st. Turn left on W Colorado Ave. Parking: There are plenty of free public lots, Drive around on the east and west side of the neighborhood to find them. |
