Pikes Peak Writers ConferenceThe Pikes Peak Writers Conference is an annual event in Colorado Springs that brings agents, editors, and authors to Colorado for a weekend in April. Many of the industry professionals are from New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. They include representation from several major publishing houses and literary agencies. Major guests and keynote speakers have included Jeffrey Deaver, Robert Crais, Nora Roberts, and Donald Maass. Aside from the big names who are frequently in attendance, another big draw for the Pikes Peak Writing Conference are the pitch sessions. These allow unpublished authors to “pitch” their creative ideas to influential pros. By meeting editors and agents in person, writers hoping to get published can avoid the dreaded slush pile. And editors and agents can hopefully find the next big thing, or at least get to know the faces and names of those who show promise. The conference is a great way to network, meet new friends, and learn valuable lessons in the craft of writing. The focus at PPWC seems to be more on genre fiction such as mystery, romance, science fiction, and horror, but all writers are welcome and there is something to gain for everyone who attends. Another draw are the breakout sessions, which can offer information on anything from story structure and media training, to something as odd as how to conduct a paranormal investigation. The conference began in 1993 as simply a group of writer friends, and has grown to a full-blown conference with over 300 in attendance. The magazine Writer’s Digest voted Pikes Peak Writers Conference as one of the top ten conferences in the USA. The past several years has seen PPWC taking place at the Colorado Springs Marriott Hotel.
