Rock Climbing ColoradoRock climbing Colorado is one of the most thrilling ways to enjoy this beautiful state. The Colorado Springs region is especially known for its massive slabs of red-orange sandstone. From the Garden of the Gods city park to Red Rock Canyon Open Space, there is plenty of rock to go around. And if that’s not enough, within an hour’s drive there is much, much more. I guess when you live near the Rocky Mountains, you’re bound to find something to climb. We recently had the privilege of interviewing a local rock climber, our good friend Amy H. Amy is a teacher in Colorado Springs and in her free time she is a true outdoor enthusiast. Amy introduced us to the mighty Manitou Incline, and when she’s not hiking or tele-skiing (she recently went on a hut-to-hut trip in the Canadian Rockies), she is conquering the Leadville 50--that’s 50 miles--on her mountain bike. So she was our natural go-to person to ask about the thrills and chills of rock climbing Colorado. Here's what she had to say:
Q: When and how did you start rock climbing?Amy: I started rock climbing about 3 years ago. Q: Where are some hot spots in the Colorado Springs area (and beyond) to go rock climbing? Amy: There is some great local climbing at the Garden of the Gods and Red Rocks. There is sport climbing 45 minutes away in Canon City. There are loads of different climbing walls there and it is a very popular spot for beginning or advanced climbers. As far as trad climbing, there is Turkey rocks which is 45 minutes west of town past Woodland Park. There are single and multi-pitch climbs there that are fantastic.
Amy: The best place to get gear is the Mountain Chalet downtown Colorado Springs. An excellent place for lessons is the Colorado Springs Premier Indoor Climbing Gym, which is located on Garden of the Gods Blvd. Rock Climbing Colorado - Red Rock Canyon Open Space
Q: What's the most challenging part of rock climbing for you? Amy: The most challenging part of rock climbing is getting over the head game. When you first start leading it is difficult to get past the fear mentally.
Amy: My favorite part of rock climbing is just being out there with friends and having a good time. Other than that, I really enjoy learning to lead different routes.
Amy: There are loads of great places to climb all throughout Colorado. Colorado Springs however is a great place to be as far as some nice easy sport climbing. There are many beginner places to learn with easy climbs.
*** INSIDER TIP: If you are new to rock climbing Colorado in the Pikes Peak region, be aware of your skills and limitations. We have seen many people getting rescued from the Garden of the Gods because they were not prepared for the challenges there. Be safe and wise! And, of course, have fun!*** Mountain Chalet Sport Climbing Center of Colorado Springs |
