Snowshoeing in Colorado
- Wolf Creek update

Our original Snowshoeing in Colorado page mentioned the West Fork Ski Track near Pagosa Springs, which follows switchbacks up the side of the mountain near Treasure Falls.

On our most recent trip to Pagosa, we wanted to go higher. The guys at Ski & Bow Rack told us to try Lobo Overlook.

This snowshoeing & XC skiing trail can be reached by heading east on Hwy 160 out of town, then going about 23 miles until you crest the Wolf Creek Pass, then look for a parking lot on your left (the north side of the road).

From the parking lot, follow the trail (or make your own, you’ve got snowshoes!) up the rest of the mountain. The elevation is breathtaking at over 11,000 feet, so bring water and sunscreen and patience. But the views are amazing at every stage of this trail.

We followed the tracks of someone who had clearly snowshoed up and snowboarded down. A very cool idea, one we wished we had thought of once we got close to the top. The powder up there is untouched, and riding back down the trail would’ve been a blast.

Some of the mountain views on this trail are unbelievable. And it’s so quiet up there, it’s like the whole area is all yours. You really feel like you’re on another planet.

The Lobo Overlook trail is about 1.5 miles long, and we were told is frequented by cross-country skiers, although we didn’t see another soul the whole time we were up there.

And we almost made it to the top, where there is apparently a microwave tower of some sort. But our light was fading, and our lungs were ready for oxygen, so we saved our energy for the trek back down.

If you’re planning on snowshoeing near Pagosa Springs, definitely give this trail a shot.

You can rent snowshoes at Ski & Bow Rack OR Summit Ski & Sports-- both are on the east side of town, on your way to the trail.
