Wolf Creek Ski Area

Wolf Creek Ski Area - Trees

Wolf Creek Ski Area is a skiing gem nestled in southern Colorado, 15 miles east of Pagosa Springs on Hwy 160, right on top of the Wolf Creek Pass in the San Juan Mountains.

It's about a 4-hour drive from Colorado Springs, but the scenic ride past the Sangre de Cristo mountains and into the San Juans is worth it.

The first time we arrived here, it snowed 19 inches on a Thursday.

Not only was the powder incredible, but we were only one of 300 people on the entire mountain, when normally they have about 1200.

It felt like the whole place was our powder paradise.

I can't promise that will happen if you visit, but wow, what an amazing introduction to Wolf Creek. We really love this place, for a number of reasons. But most importantly...

Wolf Creek Ski Area - Snow AMAZING SNOW

They tout “the most snow in Colorado,” and at 465 natural inches of snow per year, I think they can stake that claim.

Wolf Creek is well-known in the state for having great powder dumps from its abundant snowstorms.

This means you might not always get those famous Colorado bluebird skies, but if you love snow, you won't mind.

LAID-BACK ATTITUDE

They are not out to impress anyone with fancy apres ski (there isn't any) or shops that sell mink coats (none of those either).

If you're looking for a high-end retail experience with heated gondolas, Wolf Creek is not for you.

But it is family-friendly, the patrons are considerate, and the vibe is mellow.

I've heard it described as having a “brown bag” feel, which is true, except that they actually serve some pretty good food and a variety of micro-brews.

Wolf Creek Ski Area - Powder VARIED RUNS

The back country section serviced by the Alberta lift provides plenty of action for black diamond lovers, as well as the Knife Ridge Chutes, and the Waterfall Area.

We like cruising through all the trees in the blues off the Treasure Chair. And the Wolf Pup program can get newbies up and skiing in no time.

FRIENDLY STAFF

The Wolf Creek Ski Area staff wave you in to the parking lot and say “welcome,” they are happy to help you at the ticket counter, and the lift operators are also helpful and patient.

You can still have a good time skiing or snowboarding without friendly staff, but it's sure cool when they're nice.

Wolf Creek Ski Area - Hwy 160 GETTING THERE

From Colorado Springs, the easiest way to Wolf Creek Ski Area is I-25 south to Walsenburg, then Hwy 160 west past South Fork. The Ski Area is on top of the Wolf Creek Pass.

Pagosa Springs is a cute town on the other side of the pass where you can find plenty of lodging options.

You might really enjoy a soak in The Springs Resort's famous sulfur springs after all that time in the snow. 800-225-0934.

***INSIDER TIP: Don't shower immediately after soaking in the springs. The locals tell us if you sleep with the minerals still on your skin, you'll wake up invigorated.***

If you want to cut your drive down or avoid crossing the pass, you can also stay on the east side of Wolf Creek Pass in South Fork.
