Colorado Hot Springs
Colorado hot springs are a natural part of the Colorado experience. Soothing mineral waters, babbling brooks, beautiful scenery. It’s all here. You can sit in an actual mountain stream or visit a resort that has the spring water pumped in. Whatever gets your hot springs going. In Colorado, hot springs are plentiful. And they are generally divided into sulphur & non-sulphur, and clothing-mandatory & clothing-optional. Here are some of our favorites, and a few more that we’ve heard a lot about… MT. PRINCETON HOT SPRINGS – Nathrop, CO (Non-sulphur, clothing mandatory) This is our favorite pick if you’re coming from Colorado Springs. Only 1.5 hours west of Colorado Springs in Nathrop, Colorado, the Mt. Princeton Hot Springs Resort give you a great Colorado hot springs experience. The main features are an Olympic-size heated pool, a smaller (but still quite large) and hotter soaking pool, and the beloved natural hot springs right in the Chalk Creek, where you can literally stand up from your soak, take a few steps, and splash around in frigid creek water. Or just lay back in the springs, stare up at the stars, and search the cliffs in Chalk Creek Canyon for grazing deer. It’s a great way to relax after a day of snowshoeing! They also offer a changing room, showers, lockers and towels. The friendly staff make this an overall excellent experience. You can also stay at the resort or rent a cabin, but this can make a great day trip from Colorado Springs. Getting there: From Colorado Springs, take Hwy. 24 west to Johnson Village. At the stop sign turn South on Hwy 285, towards Salida. Go 5.5 miles to Nathrop. Watch for the sign that says Mount Princeton and St. Elmo. This is County Road 162, turn right. They are located 4.5 miles down the road on the left side. Mt. Princeton Hot Springs Mtprinceton.com
THE SPRINGS RESORT – Pagosa Springs, CO (Sulphur, clothing mandatory)
This resort in the southwest part of the state is a good 4 hours from Colorado Springs, but the experience is worth the drive. Pagosa Springs is a quiet little town with a mellow vibe, and smack dab in the center of downtown is this odd resort that smells like sulphur and sits right on the edge of the San Juan River. This was our first Colorado hot springs experience, and what a great one. Eighteen (18) hot pools are situated along the riverbank, with varying temperatures and sizes to fit your desires. With names like Tranquility and Paradise, you can imagine what type of experience you’ll have. Watch out, though, for the Lobster Pot. It’s a hot one. Only for the brave. You can also sit right down next to the river in pools like The Burg, that get you up close and personal with cold water, river rock, and 20-inch trout. The minerals in these hot springs left us feeling like our skin was vibrating. If you can handle the sulphur smell (once you’re there for a while you don’t even notice it) you’ll have a great time. If you can, stay until nightfall to watch the sunset from The Sunset Social Club pool, and soak in the eerie turquoise glow of the pools as they’re lit up at night. They just recently opened 5 new deluxe soaking pools. Getting there: From Colorado Springs, take I-25 south for 90 miles. Go west on CO-160 for 159 miles into Pagosa Springs. Turn left at Hot Springs Blvd. The Springs Resort and Spa 165 Hot Springs Blvd.Pagosa Springs, CO 81147 Toll Free: 800-225-0934 Phone: 970 264-4168 Pagosahotsprings.com
