Downtown Colorado SpringsDowntown Colorado Springs really is a gem.A mix of modern and quaint, the city has entertainment and commerce joining together along tree-lined streets, and always with a beautiful view of Pikes Peak on the horizon.
It's a wonderful collection of shops and art galleries, restaurants and brew pubs, museums, parks, a college, and even a movie house. All within a pedestrian-friendly environment that has ample parking to boot. Technically, downtown Colorado Springs is comprised of 90 square blocks, with I-25 as a West boundary, Wasatch as East, Uintah as North, and Moreno as South. That may seem like a large area, but it feels small. With the city 's low profile--the tallest buildings only reach 10 or 12 stories--and all the trees and beautiful parks, it's easy to miss such a thriving downtown. But there it is.
The brightest and busiest section is easily Tejon Street. Several parks are included within the downtown Colorado Springs area. The most central is Acacia, where a weekly farmer's market in the summer is a big attraction.Acacia Park is frequently busy with shuffleboard, political gatherings, job fairs, and visitors to the whimsical Uncle Wiggly water fountain. Along the northwest edge is Monument Valley Park, which follows Monument Creek and makes for a great place to take a walk, run, or bike ride. And the newest of the parks is America the Beautiful, a wide open space on the southwest edge dominated by the spectacular Julie Penrose water fountain and wading pool. The Antlers Hilton is the most prominent building in the area, and is your best bet for hotel lodging. Bed & Breakfasts can also be found scattered throughout downtown within walking distance of the main thoroughfare. Sculptures add color and curiosity to the sidewalks. From the confused cowboy reading a map to giant yellow sunflowers, you'll always have something to contemplate along your stroll.“Art on the Streets” is a project that has brought as many as 160 different sculptures downtown. One easily missed resource is the Pikes Peak Library District's Penrose branch. It's a great place to visit if you're looking for travel information or just want to check your email or read the local newspaper. Located on 20 N Cascade Ave. Being book hounds ourselves, we also recommend a visit to our favorite hangout, Poor Richard's. A unique combination of book store/coffee & wine bar/toy store/deli/pizza shop. Stop by and you'll see what we mean. 320 N Tejon St. Some of the main attractions in downtown Colorado Springs include:* The Pioneers Museum * The Numismatic Museum * The Playhouse Theater * Kimball's Twin Peak Movie Theater * Fine Arts Center With so much to do and see in such an easy-to-navigate and relatively small area, downtown Colorado Springs is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon or evening. Getting There: Located just East of I-25, downtown is most easily accessed via the Bijou Street exit, which will get you right in the thick of things. You can also use the Uintah exit and then head south on Cascade or Tejon. << From Downtown Colorado Springs back HOME << Things to Do << Shopping << Nightclubs << Restaurants << Brew Pubs << Cafes << Museums << Attractions |
