Great Sand Dunes LodgeThe Great Sand Dunes Lodge is our favorite place to stay when we visit Great Sand Dunes National Park.
Location, location, location. Located near Mosca, Colorado, the GSD Lodge is literally only a few miles from the park, making it the closest accommodations possible without camping or pulling up your trailer. The next closest lodging is in Alamosa, which is about 30 miles away. We’ve stayed there too, and it’s alright, but there’s something special about being at the Great Sand Dunes Lodge. The lodge itself is really just a motel. Nothing fancy. A dozen or more standard rooms with patios. But the rooms are kept immaculately clean, and the owners are extremely friendly people. What you really want to focus on, however, is the view.
Off your private patio, you get to gaze at the other-worldly beauty of the Great Sand Dunes, including the tallest of the dunes: Star Dune. And surrounding those are several 13,000 peaks from the Sangre de Cristo mountains. And beyond it all is the sprawling San Luis Valley. Just sitting and gazing on the back porch might be enough to keep you entertained. The panoramic view is constantly shifting and morphing with the change of the sun’s angle. Watch storms 30 miles away rain down on the valley. And keep on the lookout for frequent rainbows. It's the kind of place that makes for a nice romantic getaway. You also can’t miss the hummingbirds. Just beyond the patios are a number of bright red bird feeders, and those hummingbirds make good use of them. Often there may be four or five little guys silently hovering only a few feet away.
For dining, there are picnic tables and gas grills available. And there is a heated indoor pool, which can be a wonderful break after a few hours climbing the dunes, or hiking the trails to Zapata Falls. There is a restaurant within walking distance open in the summer and early fall. They also provide a continental breakfast, microwave and ice. The Great Sand Dunes Lodge is closed from roughly November-March due to inclement weather. Rates: $84-$135 depending on room type (standard/deluxe) and number of persons staying. Getting There: From Colorado Springs, take I-25 south 90 miles, then go west on US-160 for about 60 miles to Hwy 150 North. The lodge is located at the 16-mile marker on Highway 150 at the Park entrance. Make a right turn at the Amoco gas station and follow the signs. Great Sand Dunes Lodge |
