Haunted Places to Travel Around the World – Part 4

Did you know that at least 86 people died after watching a supposedly cursed horror movie called “Antrum?’ If people can die by only watching horror movies, what about those who travel to real-life horror places in the world?

Today’s list will definitely send a shiver down your spine!

The Island of the Dolls – Mexico

Everyone has heard of Annabelle, the famous haunted doll. But what if I tell you that there is an island filled with such dolls?

Found near Mexico City, the Dolls Island has been named one of the world’s scariest tourist attractions. As the name suggests, it is an island full of horrific dolls of different styles and colours, hanging from trees and wooden shacks. However, the story of the island is as spooky as the dolls themselves. So, let’s learn more about it!

In the 1950s, a Mexican man called Don Julian Santana Barrera was the owner of that island. One day while walking around the island, he discovered the body of a young girl who had drowned and was entangled among the lilies of the canal. Suddenly, a doll washed up on the shore and thinking that it used to belong to the girl, Don Julian hang it on a tree as a sign of respect to the deceased. And, now the real story begins! Soon after Don Julian started to feel the presence of a spirit roaming around the island and following him. Out of fear, he began to gather dolls from garbage or canals and hung them on trees. He kept on looking for more dolls as he used to believe that the dolls would satisfy the troubled spirit of the girl who repeatedly cried out: “I want my doll!”

Unfortunately, the story took a sinister turn when in 2001, Don Julian’s body was found drowned in that same canal where the girl died. Despite his family members’ statements saying that there was no such spirit on the island, many claimed that the dolls, inhabited by evil spirits, were the ones to murder him.

Many people who have visited the island said that they actually saw the dolls’ heads turn to look at them. Other visitors have heard whispers coming from the dolls.

So, to all the courageous people who decide to go there, don’t forget to bring a doll with you!

Lizzie Borden House – Massachusetts

The Lizzie Borden House is located on a rocky hill in the city of Fall River in Massachusetts. However, this house is not like any ordinary house. Instead, it is home to one of the most gruesome and tragic murder cases in the United States.

The Lizzie Borden House belonged to the Borden family which included Andrew Borden, his wife, Abby Borden and their two daughters Emma and Lizzie Borden. However, tragedy struck the family on 4 August 1892, where Andrew was found murdered by a hatchet in the living room while Abby was butchered in the guest room.

When investigation was carried out, their daughter, Lizzie, was suspected and tried. Back then, it was believed that Lizzie had a great disdain for her stepmother. After considerable investigation, a hatchet with a broken handle was discovered in the cellar of the house. However, there was neither concrete evidence to prove that the hatchet was used to commit the murder nor an eyewitness testimony of Lizzie being in the house on the day of the murders. Therefore, she was acquitted of the crime.

Today, the Borden’s house is owned by Martha McGinn and is operated as bed and breakfast. It is noted that out of all the rooms, the place where Abby Borden was murdered is the most requested room by individuals.

A self-proclaimed “medium” and a paranormal scientist declared that they had experienced ghostly events during their visits to the Lizzie Borden House. For instance, many other visitors were occasionally touched by an unseen force, heard weird whispers and children laughing at night. Some guests even claimed that the spirits in the house could be bribed to leave you alone. For example, you can place some coins on the bedroom desk of Andrew Borden or offer some toys to the children’s spirits to appease them.

If you are curious about unsolved crimes and courageous enough to risk your life, the Lizzie Borden House is open to the general public! And if you are bold enough, you can even sleep in the room where Abbey Borden was cut down with an axe.

Not all places in the world are worth visiting. Some hold some dark secrets that, when uncovered, can lead to terrifying consequences. What are your views about the scary places mentioned above?
